IES Provides Insights on Refurbishment of First-Generation Trains
In a recent interview published on Lianhe Zaobao (联合早报), Associate Professor Yap Fook Fah, Member of the Railway & Transportation Engineering Technical Committee of IES, provided his insights in the piece titled "The first-generation trains underwent major refurbishment in 2004" ('第一代列车2004年经历大翻新').
In the article, Professor Yap highlighted that the first-generation trains underwent a major refurbishment in 2004 to extend their service lifespan. However, the second- and third-generation trains have not undergone similar overhauls, likely due to rapid technological advancements over the past 10 years. Instead of refurbishing older models, purchasing new trains with more advanced, energy-efficient systems may be more cost-effective and improve commuter experience.
Additionally, as these train fleets shrink with retirements, maintenance efficiency declines due to limited spare parts. This might have also influenced the decision to retire the entire fleet.
Excerpts of Prof Yap's insights:
➡️ “The first-generation trains underwent a mid-term overhaul in 2004 to replace key components to extend their service lifespan.”
➡️ “Now, it may be more cost-effective to purchase new trains with more advanced and energy-efficient systems, concurrently greatly improving the commuters’ experience.”
➡️ “Smaller fleets generally have lower spare parts inventory and fewer trains are available for parts replacement. When a train is taken out of service due to fault, the negative impact is greater, leading the authorities to decide to retire the entire fleet altogether.”
